Research on the integration of clinical psychologists into healthcare institutions

As part of the "Psychologist. Doctor. Patient" project, MCG analysts were tasked with researching the actual state of clinical psychologist inclusion in Ukraine's medical institutions. The healthcare transformation process involves transitioning to a multidisciplinary model where the psychologist is a full participant in the treatment process; however, the success of such integration often depends on local management practices and team readiness.

Research Objectives

The project aimed to provide a comprehensive assessment of specialist integration levels within the healthcare system. The analysts were required to examine organizational working conditions and interaction practices within multidisciplinary teams (MDTs), while identifying barriers to the systemic implementation of psychological support at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of medical care.

Research Methodology

The study was conducted through a quantitative survey covering all macro-regions of Ukraine. Within the project, a proprietary analytical model for measuring integration was applied, evaluating the process across four levels (institutional-normative, cultural, team-oriented, and objective) through four dimensions: cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and structural. Four professional groups were included in the survey: clinical psychologists, physicians, nursing/support staff, and healthcare administration, providing a multifaceted "insider" view of the system.

Research Results

Based on the project's results, a comprehensive analytical report was prepared, and a system of integration indices was calculated. The findings allowed the client to:

1. Assess the gap between high levels of emotional acceptance of psychologists ("part of the team") and insufficient institutional formalization of their role (lack of clear engagement algorithms and access to documentation).
2. Reveal that real integration primarily occurs through practical interaction within MDTs, while normative regulation at the institutional level often lags behind specialists' actual needs.
3. Compare integration processes across different healthcare tiers, recording the deepest integration into clinical processes at the tertiary level.
4. Develop a package of strategic recommendations for hospital managers and health departments to overcome stereotypes and stabilize the integration model.
